Manga, Japanese comics, are extremely popular for people of all ages in Japan. There are Manga created for all walks of life, ages, woman, men, children ext. Sailormoon is considered Shoujo, ie for girls, and it's broken down further into Magical Girl Shoujo. It's age range is probably a little older than the anime as it's darker and has a lot more graphic violence and adult themes (including implied sex later in the series).
